- Course Description
Offers guided instruction in yoga. Students practice yoga according to their individual fitness levels and abilities. Emphasizes enhancing general health and well-being through the performance of yoga strength, flexibility, balance and relaxation techniques and exercise.
Yoga is a lifetime practice of opening ones awareness to possibilities. This course offers guided, playful instruction in developing a basic yoga practice for home use and future advanced practice as desired. You will learn the physical poses and sequence of the Sun Salutation, and how to incorporate easy standing poses, hip and heart openers and other postures that focus on the muscle groups that we (over) use in our active lifestyle. We will explore ancient relaxation techniques of breathing and meditation – both of these can be used to counter the stress of higher education. You can have tight hamstrings and still have a productive yoga practice! You can be the most hyperactive of people and still have a rich meditation practice. Each student practices according to their individual fitness levels and ability in a safe, welcoming environment.

-
Evaluation Methods and Class Management
Yoga is participatory; it is based in practice, in doing. Each class will explore different aspects of the physical and/or meditative practice of yoga. The class will build in complexity over the semester so that you will have the confidence and experience to practice outside of class, or be able to attend an “all levels” class at a studio or school. All grades are based on attendance; there are make-up options available.
CREDIT: Students choosing a letter grade option are graded on attendance only. Instructor maintains the right to adjust the grade based on the student’s quality of class participation. Students are encouraged to make up classes rather than drop; this is easily done by attending any of the other yoga classes offered during the semester and bringing a note from that instructor or have that instructor email me. A student may opt to complete a non-physical assignment to complete the class; this should be discussed directly with me. The following grading system is used for twice weekly classes.
A – Maximum 2 Absences
B – 3 Absences
C – 4 Absences
D – 5 Absences
F – 6 or more Absences
3 Tardies or Early Departures = 1 Absence
PASS/FAIL: Yoga classes are offered on a pass/fail basis for 1 credit. A passing grade is based on attendance and participation.
Pass grade = 4 absences allowed, if classes are missed, make-up classes are available.
Fail grade = Miss more than 4 classes without attending make-up classes.
Students with 5 or more consecutive absences may be dropped from the class by the instructor at any time.
AUDIT: The classes are also offered on an audit basis; no required attendance
NOTICE:
A student judged to have engaged in academic misconduct as defined in the “Academic Policies and Requirements” section of the Colorado Mountain College Student Handbook will, at a minimum, receive a “zero” for the work in question. The student may also be removed from the class, resulting in a failing grade. All student course material may be submitted to turnitin.com (or another anti-plagiarism program) at the instructor’s discretion. “Academic Expectations”, the “Student Code of Conduct and Judicial Process” and more information about academic misconduct can be found in the Student Handbook.
Students are responsible for course materials from assigned text(s) and reading, lectures, labs, and other assignments as required.
The instructor may alter any, or all, of this syllabus during the semester as the learning environment requires. Students will be notified in writing of changes.
Attendance at all class meetings is expected.
-
Attendance and No-Show Reporting
